Opononi and Omapere are dual settlements on the south shore of the Hokianga harbour. Opononi became famous in the early 50’s when a wild dolphin swam into the harbour and played with the swimmers on the beach. She was featured on television and became a famous national icon. Pose for a photo by the statue of the world famous friendly dolphin Opo.
A boat trip across the harbour for sand boarding down the giant Hokianga dunes returning for lunch in Opononi at the hotel or fish & chips and relax on the beach.
The museum shows a video story about Opo & history of the Hokianga. Our scenic drive thru Omapere ends with a short walk to a panoramic lookout point with views from the Tasman Sea in one direction to the sand dunes and far reaches of the harbour in the other.
