Seal Coast Safari – Wellington Tours offers exclusive scenic tours to Wellington’s rugged coastline, offering sublime views, exclusive access to private farmland and the chance to encounter New Zealand fur seals up close and personal. Come and enjoy the best Wellington has to offer and have a cup of coffee and gourmet muffin with the seals, whilst taking in the true beauty of Wellington.
For interesting landmarks, breath-taking views and a herd of adorable seals, nothing beats the 4WD Seal Coast Safari to Wellington's rugged Southern tip, commonly known as the Seal Coast. To get the most out of your experience, it's recommended that you bring a waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes and a camera to capture all the exciting moments.
You'll climb aboard your air-conditioned 4WD vehicle and set out on a three hour adventure that will take you only 12 miles out of Wellington but will feel like another world.
After winding your way through the city streets, you'll travel over farmland with fabulous views of Cook Strait and the South Island off in the distance (weather permitting). As you get closer to the Seal Colony, you'll see the famous Leaning Lighthouse come into view. Built in 1915, the decommissioned 65-foot tall tower was one of New Zealand's first automated lighthouses and, yes, it does lean a little.
You'll continue along the beach, over some rough terrain until you reach Tongue Point, home to 600 native fur seals (fewer during the summer months). As your guide leads you to the best spot for taking pictures, they'll share their knowledge of these heart-warming mammals. Go ahead and walk through their natural habitat; although the seals are familiar with human interaction, we do have to be cautious and not approach too close – a fully grown Male Fur Seal can reach ten feet tall and weigh up to 700 pounds!
After some refreshing morning or afternoon tea, you'll board your 4WD vehicle once again for the ride back to the city. En route you'll cross Farmland & Fault lines while enjoying the bumpy ride!
