Scenic Flights, Walking Trails and Outdoor Adventures in Fox Glacier

Franz Josef Glacier

Well-maintained Walking & Hiking tracks like the Fox Glacier South Side Walk provides accessible viewpoints overlooking the glacier's terminal face and towering rock walls carved by moving ice over millennia.

Nearby alpine lookouts, river valleys, and mountain trails showcase dramatic landscapes of braided rivers, waterfalls, snow-capped peaks, and the ever-changing Southern Alps.

For those wanting to step onto the ice itself, guided heli-hike experiences provide a unique opportunity to explore the ice caves, and glacier formations in person. And they are the most popular things to do in order to see unmatched perspectives of the icy landscapes and mountain peaks high above the valley.

Fox Glacier and the Region's Iconic Ice LandscapesFox Glacier South Side Walkway

Fox Glacier is best known for its namesake glacier. Known as Te Moeka o Tuawe in te reo Māori, the glacier descends from the Southern Alps through temperate rainforest, creating one of the world's most spectacular natural environments.

Just north, Franz Josef Glacier offers another world-renowned glacier experience, making it easy to explore both during a visit. Lake Matheson is one of the region's most celebrated natural attractions, famous for its mirror-like reflections of Aoraki / Mount Cook and Mount Tasman on calm mornings.

Travellers can visit two distinctive glacial valleys within a single visit and gain a deeper appreciation of the forces that continue to shape the West Coast landscape.

Lake Matheson and Alpine Wilderness Around Fox GlacierLake Matheson

Fox Glacier is surrounded by diverse landscapes. One of the area's most celebrated natural attractions is Lake Matheson, famous for its mirror-like reflections of Aoraki / Mount Cook and Mount Tasman on calm days. It is also renowned for producing some of the most photographed reflections in New Zealand.

The easy 4.4-kilometre loop walk around Lake Matheson crosses through suspension bridges, wetlands, and viewing platforms that each offer a different perspective of the lake and surrounding mountains.

Calm waters around nearby Lakes also create opportunities for Kayaking, while guided Nature & Wildlife experiences introduce visitors to the region's unique ecosystems. Native birds inhabit the forests including the tūī, bellbird (korimako), fantail (pīwakawaka), kererū (New Zealand pigeon), and the elusive rowi kiwi, one of the world's rarest kiwi species.

Gold Mining Heritage & Alpine Community LifeRoberts Point Track

While glaciers define the landscape, Fox Glacier also has a rich history shaped by early European settlers, gold miners, and generations of West Coast communities.

Historic sites surrounding the village reveal the legacy of nineteenth-century gold mining, with the Tatare Tunnels Walk and Callery Gorge Walk leading visitors past abandoned water races, mining tunnels, and relics slowly being reclaimed by native forest.

These walking tracks offer insight into the determination of the region's early prospectors while highlighting the resilience of the surrounding environment. Today, Fox Glacier remains a welcoming alpine community centred on nature-based tourism and conservation. Local guides, family-run businesses, and outdoor operators share knowledge of the glaciers, rainforest, and local history, giving visitors a deeper appreciation of the landscape beyond its spectacular scenery.
