Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to/from Ocean Beach?

We offer a dedicated water-taxi service from Golden Bay Wharf. This transfer takes approximately 20 minutes each way and follows the coastline to/from Little Glory where your freedom walk starts and ends. Points of interest along the way include, Ulva Island, The Old Neck, and Little Glory Bay. We land at a wharf, so there are no wet feet. You can book this online or call us if you need specialized times.

What is special about this walk?

If you want to get off the beaten track and experience something different, we highly recommend this walk. It is a lot less visited than Ulva Island (chances are you will not see anyone else whilst there). Explore another part of Stewart Island, home to sealions, penguins, kiwi, and more!

How long is the walk?

Approximately 1.5-2 hours to do the whole loop track from Little Glory Wharf, through to Ocean Beach, and then back through the forest and little bays along the way. The track is very well marked and easy to follow. Locals will tell you take your time, as there plenty of stunning views and picturesque spots to rest, and most people complete the walk quicker than anticipated.

Do I need a guide?

For this walk we do not recommend a guide. The tracks are very well marked and the skipper will give you plenty of relevant information.

Are the tracks very muddy?

There may be some parts that are a little muddy after heavy rain, but normally nothing that feels impassable. Our team can give you an update on track conditions.

Do I need to book water-taxi in advance?

It is recommended to book in advance. We can also customize times to suit you.

What happens if the weather is bad?

If we deem the weather conditions or forecast to be dangerous, we will cancel the booking, and you will receive a full refund. Please note, Stewart Island does receive a lot of rain and wind at times – be sure to bring clothing for all conditions. We can provide up to date forecasts to help you make informed decisions.
