The Gold Discovery Trail Horse Trek

The Gold Discovery Trail is a memorable horse trekking experience through the heart of Cardrona’s rich gold-mining and farming history. Following the path of early prospectors from the 1860s, you’ll ride alongside the Cardrona River, cross its clear waters, and keep an eye out for gold as you go.

This guided trek takes you through willow-lined riverbanks and into the mountains of a working sheep and cattle station, where you’ll ride among mobs of Merino sheep and enjoy breathtaking views across the Cardrona Valley, Mount Cardrona, and the Crown Range. A climb to a beautiful vantage point rewards you with sweeping alpine scenery that makes this ride truly special.

No prior riding experience is needed. Before the trek departs, each rider receives a one-on-one lesson tailored to their ability, ensuring you feel comfortable and confident in the saddle. Children can be led from a lead horse if required, making this a fantastic option for families as well as first-time riders.

The trek departs at 9:30am from Cardrona, just 20 minutes from Wanaka or 45 minutes from Queenstown via the Crown Range Road. You’ll be riding one of the carefully selected trekking horses, chosen for their calm, friendly temperament and matched to each rider’s size and experience. Comfortable Syd Hill half-breed saddles are used, with monkey straps for added stability and children’s saddles available.
