Join us for one of the most popular tours on the West Coast of NZ, as we take you on a jet boat ride up a remote backcountry river deep into the Haast UNESCO World Heritage Area.

Travel to the top of the river and listen as we impart our in-depth knowledge of the area. Pass over the Alpine Fault line and watch the truly dramatic scenery unfold. Learn about the introduced animals, visit the Kiwi sanctuary and learn about the Kiwi breeding program. The laid-back, relaxed pace of this river safari allows plenty of time for photo stops and an optional stroll followed by a scrumptious morning tea before a speedy trip back downriver to the Tasman Sea to spot some native birds before finishing off with a visit to the breeding grounds of the famous West Coast New Zealand Whitebait fishery.

Tour duration: 2.25 hours (Allow 3 hours).

Meeting Point

You’ll find Waiatoto River Safari on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, halfway between Franz Josef Glacier and Wanaka. It’s a 2-hour drive from either but the breathtaking scenery makes it well worthwhile.

Take the Haast-Jackson Bay Road turn off from State Highway 6. Then follow the Haast-Jackson Bay Road to a village called Hannahs Clearing. We’re the last building on the left.

Check-in time is 30 minutes before departure.  Please be on time.

Additional Information

Check in time is really important so you do not miss the boat. Park on main road for check-in, then after all adults have signed in, you drive a further 5 minutes to meet the boat at the river.

Duration Our river safaris are a minimum of 2 hours duration, but please allow 3 hours from check-in to the end of the tour. Mobility This tour is suitable for most levels of fitness, including disabilities. If you have a specific mobility please contact us prior to arrival so we may be prepared.
