Behind the Studio Door offers a rare opportunity to visit the working studio of contemporary New Zealand artist, Beth Strickland. Explore the creative process & experience the landscapes and stories that inspire her work.
You could be an art lover, a curious traveller, a creative spirit, or simply looking for a meaningful experience during your visit to the Waitaki region. This intimate small-group experience invites you behind the scenes of a professional artistic practice, to learn and connect.
Spend time inside the studio, ask questions, hear the stories behind the artworks, create your own piece to take home and discover the unique character of one of New Zealand's most inspiring regions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know about art?

No. This experience is for all levels of interest and experience. You could be an art lover, a curious traveller, a creative spirit, or simply looking for a meaningful experience during your visit to the Waitaki region.

Do I need to bring anything?

No. All materials for the art workshop are provided, including aprons. The price includes light refreshments but does not include any meals/drinks purchased outside the studio.

What should I wear?

Anything you are comfortable wearing - especially comfortable shoes for walking. It's recommended you bring a light jacket for changeable weather - and layered warmer clothing especially for autumn and winter seasons.

What does this include?

The half-day option includes time to talk with our working artist, a guided art workshop - where you can walk away with a completed small artwork ready to be framed, a guided tour around the local creative area with recommendations for lunch. Light refreshments are provided in the studio. Lunch/drinks outside the studio along with any purchases are not included. The full-day experience includes all of the above - with a guided tour of Kakanui and the Waitaki Valley in a comfortable vehicle. This afternoon tour can be very flexible according to your interests. In season it can include stops at local wineries. Get to know the local area with a local artist.
