Franz Josef, Tasman and Shackleton Glacier
Franz Josef is known for its stunning natural surroundings, and there’s a lot to explore without needing to go too far. The glacier itself is the big draw, and you can walk partway up the valley to a viewpoint where the ice comes into view. Along the way, you’ll pass waterfalls, boulders, and thick rainforest.
Another favourite is the short track to Peter’s Pool, a still little lake that perfectly reflects the mountains on a clear day. Callery Gorge is another walk that leads to a narrow, deep gorge with blue water and a swing bridge. For a bigger challenge, the Roberts Point Track takes you high above the valley, with views right over the glacier.
Back in town, you can visit a local wildlife centre that cares for rare kiwis and teaches about conservation. There's also a small, historic church with glacier views through its windows. All around, the mix of mountains, ice, forest, and wildlife gives this small town a special feel.
