Lower Hutt offers a quiet escape just a short drive from Wellington. It’s a place where you can enjoy open spaces, rivers, and hills without going too far from the city. The Hutt River Trail is a great starting point. It stretches for over 20 kilometres and is perfect for walking, cycling, or even a light jog. The path runs alongside the river, with plenty of places to stop, picnic, or just take in the view.
If you’re into nature, head to the East Harbour Regional Park. There are walking tracks that take you through bush-covered hills with views over Wellington Harbour. Butterfly Creek is one of the more popular short walks, especially for families. You can also explore Belmont Regional Park, which has biking trails and quiet spots to relax.
On rainy days, the Dowse Art Museum is a great place to explore. It often features modern local art, craft design, and interactive exhibits. Lower Hutt also has plenty of sports fields, swimming pools, and skate parks, making it a good place for active travellers. It’s easy-going, close to nature, and great for a relaxed day out.
