Many attractions in Manapouri are tied to its natural setting. Lake Manapouri itself is one of the area's highlights. With deep blue water set against a backd-r-o-p of mountains, the lake feels untouched and open. You’ll often see small sailboats or kayakers heading toward the scattered islands near the middle of the lake.
Just outside town, the road leads toward Doubtful Sound. The journey there includes a boat trip across Lake Manapouri and a drive over Wilmot Pass, one of New Zealand’s most remote roads. The views from the top, and the stillness of the fiord below, are unlike anything else in the country.
If you're into hiking, the short Key Summit track is one of the best alpine viewpoints accessible by day trip. For something longer, the Kepler Track loops from Te Anau, passing mountain ridges, lakeshores, and beech forests, some of which were filming locations for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
These attractions in Manapouri aren’t showy. They don’t need to be. They speak for themselves through scale, silence, and the sense of space you carry with you even after you leave.
