New Plymouth is Taranaki region's only city. The waterfront at New Plymouth has a wonderful museum and heritage centre. There is also a stunning 10km walk along the coast with beautiful views. New Plymouth is known for its galleries, parks and gardens. Pukekura Park has a children's zoo, bush walks and absolutely beautiful gardens. There is fantastic surfing and a choice of 20 golf courses in the region. Mount Taranaki provides skiing and snowboarding, rock climbing and alpine walks along with a dramatic backdrop to the city. The Egmont National Park encompasses the huge volcano Mount Egmont, and offers lush waterfalls, rainforests and mossy swamps and extensive walks from 15 minutes to 3 days.
