Why Visit Pauanui?

Nature and Wildlife experiences and Scenic Tours & Excursions provide further ways to explore the coastal environment and surrounding landscape.

For travellers who enjoy being active, Pauanui provides easy access to Surfing, Kayaking and Canoeing, Fishing, Walking and Hiking, Cycling and Mountain Biking and Golf. Those interested in coastal exploration can also use the area as a base for Diving and fishing trips around the nearby offshore islands and coastal waters.

Explore Pauanui and the Surrounding Areas

Pauanui sits on one side of the Tairua Harbour, with Tairua across the water. The two communities are closely connected and can be combined into the same trip, although travelling between them by road takes longer than crossing the harbour by ferry. Tairua provides access to Mount Paku, coastal walks and further boating and fishing experiences.

Further north, Whitianga provides access to the wider Mercury Bay area and well-known Coromandel attractions. Whangamata to the south offers another popular beach destination, while Waihi connects the eastern Coromandel with the Hauraki region and the Hauraki Rail Trail.

Pauanui is therefore a useful stop on a wider Coromandel road trip, particularly for travellers who want to combine beaches and coastal activities with walking, boating and the region's smaller seaside communities.

Local Tips and Interesting Facts About Pauanui

Pauanui is a purpose-built holiday community, and its name comes from the Māori words pāua and nui. Its location between the Pacific Ocean and a shallow harbour has shaped much of its recreational character, with Fishing, Surfing, swimming and Kayaking and Canoeing all forming an important part of the Pauanui experience.

Pauanui Beach is around three kilometres long and has a relatively gentle gradient, making it popular for swimming and family beach days. Surf conditions vary with the wind, and the beach can also suit Surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. During summer, the beach is patrolled, and visitors should follow local swimming and surf-safety advice.

Mount Pauanui rises to around 400 metres and provides one of the area's best viewpoints. The track is steep in places, so allow extra time and take water, particularly during warmer months. The summit provides views across Pauanui, the Pacific coastline and the surrounding Coromandel landscape, making Walking and Hiking a worthwhile part of a visit.

For a relaxed visit, one full day allows time for the beach, a walk and the harbour. Two or more days are better if you want to include water activities, Golf, Cycling and Mountain Biking or explore nearby areas as part of a wider Coromandel trip.
