Te Anau’s main attraction is the incredible nature all around it. The town itself sits right on the edge of Lake Te Anau, with wide views across the water to the mountains beyond. The lake is big, calm, and surrounded by native forest, making it a perfect place to just sit and take in the scenery.
One of the top sights here is the Te Anau Glowworm Caves, only accessible by boat. The journey starts with a cruise across the lake, followed by a guided tour through twisting limestone passages lit by glowworms overhead.
Just outside town, you’ll find Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre, where you can learn about the area’s wildlife, geology, and walking tracks. It’s a good stop before heading into the park.
Nearby viewpoints like Mount Luxmore (part of the Kepler Track) offer amazing overlooks if you’re up for the hike. Or take a drive to Lake Manapouri, another beautiful, quiet lake not far away.
Te Anau is more about natural beauty than built attractions. It’s the kind of place where you look out at the mountains, take a breath, and just enjoy where you are.
