The Hauraki Gulf is perfect for spending time on or near the water. You can take a ferry across to the islands. Once you get there, you can walk, explore the native bush, or relax on a beach. Guided walks on conservation islands show native birds and restored forest.
People swim, snorkel, paddleboard, or kayak in the calm bays. These waters are usually safe and filled with marine life. You may see fish, seabirds, or rays close to shore. Boat cruises are common. Some include chances to watch dolphins or whales. You may learn about sea birds and marine habitats from a guide on board.
For land-based options, there are some easy walking tracks on islands and near the coastline. The paths lead to lookout points or past heritage sites. Some tracks also climb to small ridges for a view over the gulf. Scenic flights are also an option, from which you can view harbour waters, islands, and farmland. It’s a quick way to appreciate the Gulf’s scale and beauty.
