Tourist Information About Hauraki Gulf

The Hauraki Gulf covers city harbours and many islands. You can visit the extinct volcanic islands. One of the islands has wide native forests, and another has a working lighthouse that is still visible from far away.

Wildlife and birds are a special part of the Hauraki Gulf’s character. One of the island is an open sanctuary known for rare native birds like kiwi and kōkako. You may spot shags nesting on small offshore rocks. Quiet beaches and clear bays line many islands. Some spots show early settler homesteads or old mansion houses set in garden reserves. These places give you a glimpse into the region’s history. Many islands have walking paths that feel peaceful and natural.

On the mainland, coastal parks and lookouts offer calm harbour views. You may see lush green islands and the city skyline in the distance. The mix of water, bush, history, and wildlife makes the Gulf area feel unique.
