Among the best opportunities in New Zealand to see kiwi up close
Wellington has some of New Zealand’s best-known attractions, all packed into a walkable, lively city. A top highlight is Te Papa Tongarewa, the national museum. It’s free to enter and offers exhibits on Māori culture, New Zealand history, art, and science. Just a short walk away is the Wellington Waterfront, with wide open spaces, public art, and great spots to sit and take in the views.
Another must-see is the Wellington Cable Car, which climbs from the city centre up to the Kelburn lookout. At the top, you’ll find the Cable Car Museum and the entrance to the Botanic Garden, which stretches across 25 hectares of native bush, gardens, and walking tracks. The Mount Victoria Lookout is another iconic spot, offering a full view of the harbour, city, and sometimes the ferries sailing to the South Island.
For something unique, visit Wētā Workshop in nearby Miramar. It gives a behind-the-scenes look at movie props and effects from films like The Lord of the Rings.
