Milky Way Glowworm Cave Tour

Discover New Zealand’s world-famous glowworms and stunning crystal formations on a guided 1-hour tour through the Milky Way Glowworm Cave. With several tours available each day, it’s a wonderful opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the underground world. 

Listen to the gentle sound of the stream as you explore the cave, surrounded by beautiful stalactites with water slowly dripping from above. Then, as you enter the darkness, look up to see the magical sparkle of glowworms shining all around you. This incredible underground beauty is truly something to behold. You may even see ancient moa bones preserved in the cave, from a time when these remarkable birds roamed New Zealand’s forests.

Your knowledgeable guide will share fascinating insights into the glowworms and the cave, making this an experience for anyone who loves nature, discovery and learning. And don’t forget your camera – there will be plenty to capture and share with friends.

Your experience begins at Waipu Caves Farm Park, where you’ll walk approximately 300 metres through native forest, including kauri and tōtara, to reach the cave entrance. Descend 30 concrete steps into the cave, then follow your guide along a concrete path with a torch provided, discovering the spectacular formations and glowworms along the way.

Tour groups are relatively small, typically with just 10–15 people, giving you a more personal experience as you explore this remarkable natural wonder.
