Russell is a small seaside town in the Bay of Islands. It has a calm, friendly feel and a lot of history. This was New Zealand’s first capital and one of the earliest European settlements. Many of the old buildings are still standing. You can visit a historic church, walk past old homes, and explore a small museum that tells the story of early life in the area. The town is easy to walk around, and signs explain the history as you go.
The waterfront is peaceful, with views across the bay. You can sit by the sea, visit a café, or take the short ferry ride back to Paihia. There are also walking tracks that lead to lookout points and quiet beaches. Russell also has art galleries, gift shops, and places to enjoy local food. It’s a mix of old and new, with a relaxed pace.
If you enjoy history, sea views, and a quiet setting, Russell is a great place to explore.
