Taupō is a town in the centre of the North Island. It sits beside New Zealand’s largest lake, Lake Taupō. The town is known for its lake views, volcanic landscape, and natural beauty. The lake is a major attraction. It was formed by a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago. Today, it is calm and wide, with mountains in the distance. You can walk along the lakefront, enjoy the views, or relax in one of the lakeside parks.
Just outside the town, you’ll find geothermal attractions. There are steaming hot pools, bubbling mud, and natural geysers in nearby reserves. These areas are easy to visit and show the volcanic side of the region. Taupō also has a famous waterfall called Huka Falls. It’s a short drive from town and very powerful. There are safe paths and viewpoints to watch the water rush by.
