The natural scenery and mix of unique places to explore are what make the attractions in Wanaka stand out. Mou Waho Island is a protected reserve reached by boat, with a small lake on top of the island and native birdlife like the flightless Weka. At the top, visitors get panoramic views of the Southern Alps and Lake Wanaka.
One of the region’s most well-known landmarks is #ThatWanakaTree, growing from the lake’s edge and often photographed during sunrise and sunset. For a quiet walk, the lakeside trails and nearby Blue Pools offer calm scenery and clear water. Mt Iron provides great views after a short uphill loop walk just outside town.
The Wanaka Lavender Farm is another relaxing place to visit. It features gardens, animals, and seasonal lavender fields. Families enjoy the calm setting and homemade ice cream. The local farmers' market, held weekly, has fresh produce and handmade goods.
Mount Aspiring National Park borders the town and has walking tracks through forest, waterfalls, and alpine views. These include Roy’s Peak and the Rob Roy Glacier Track. With a wide range of scenic and accessible sights, Wanaka’s attractions suit all kinds of travellers.
