Canterbury offers a mix of city, coast, and mountains, so you can do a bit of everything. In Christchurch, you can hop on the city’s heritage tram, ride a gondola up the Port Hills, or float along the Avon River in a wooden punt. There are bike tracks, walking trails, and public art scattered throughout the city.
Just outside Christchurch, adventure parks offer ziplining and mountain biking. If you travel inland, you’ll find ski fields like Mount Hutt where people head in winter. In warmer months, the same area is good for hiking and mountain views. Hanmer Springs is known for its thermal pools and forest walks.
You can also go jet boating or try a short bungee jump there. The Waipara region is known for wine, and you can stop at local vineyards to try what’s grown nearby. If you’re near the coast, Kaikōura is a great place to book a whale-watching or dolphin tour. With so many places to explore, activities in Canterbury offer something for all ages and interests.
