Kerikeri Heritage & Mission Station

Kerikeri is one of New Zealand’s most historically significant destinations and is often referred to as the “Cradle of the Nation.” Located beside the peaceful Kerikeri River in Northland, it sits within the heart of the Bay of Islands region. The Kerikeri Mission Station is home to two of the country’s oldest surviving buildings — Kemp House and the iconic Stone Store. Built in the early 1800s, these beautifully preserved heritage landmarks reflect the early relationship between Māori and European settlers and remain among Northland’s most visited historic attractions.

This strong cultural heritage connects Kerikeri to the wider story of New Zealand Māori culture, early European settlement, and the development of the nation, which can be explored further through our Māori Culture experiences and broader Art, Culture & Heritage activities across New Zealand.

Visitors can explore the riverside setting, browse the museum and gift store inside the Stone Store, and enjoy nearby walking tracks, cafés, galleries, and local markets that give Kerikeri its relaxed and creative atmosphere.

The Stone Store dates back to 1832 and was built as a storehouse for the neighbouring Kemp House, which is also a top tourist attraction, being New Zealand’s oldest building, but there is a fee to enter. Designed by Wesleyan missionary John Hobbs and built by an ex-convict stonemason from New South Wales, the store was meant to house large quantities of wheat from the mission farm at Te Waimate. When the wheat failed, the building was used as a kauri gum trading store. There is also a museum upstairs with a small fee to enter this part.
