Mangonui is the urban centre of Doubtless Bay. It's a natural harbour and one of the oldest ports in New Zealand. The first whaling ship arrived in Mangonui in 1792, and it soon became a bustling port of call for American whaling ships. This quaint historic whaling village and port, Mangonui is now a popular tourist area with many boutique shops, restaurants and cafés with local art and crafts, a very popular day spa and other great activities. The remains of a historic Maori fortified village can still be seen today in the unique terraces and defensive ditch cut into the hill at a pa site. To get to the top of the hill, you can either walk or drive.

The Trail is only three kilometers in length and accessible by foot or vehicle. The Trail is one and a half hours at a leisurely pace. The walk is different for everyone, with all the side tracks and tricks, like taking the St. Andrew's Walkway to access sites and enjoy the spectacular views from above Mangonui.

Playing in the sea, swimming, boogie boarding (complimentary boards at Golden Sand), surfing, windsurfing, snorkeling in the rock pools, rowing in the provided dinghy, and strolling along the beach and rocks are all options. The historic Mangonui Courthouse is located at the southern end of Doubtless Bay in the village of Mangonui on the North Island's east coast. On the Mangonui shoreline, a lovely old kauri structure sits. The Courthouse has been given a new lease on life as a venue for local artists to display their wares, and it is now open to the public and anybody interested in Mangonui's history.

 

8. Exhibit A Gallery

Exhibit A Gallery is located on the gorgeous Waterfront Drive in the historic Mangonui Courthouse. It was built in 1892 and operated as the local courthouse until 1948, when it was designated as a historic reserve.

Following extensive conservation work, the kauri building now has a new lease on life, showcasing the work of some of the region's most talented artists and craftspeople. Check out Karen Vernon's paintings, Mike Stanner's one-of-a-kind jewelry and wooden boxes, and Colleen Waite's stunning mosaic mirrors.
