Original Pioneers Caving

Escape the crowds and join Raglan Rock on the adventure of all adventures, to explore the closest caving network to Hamilton City Centre. The original pioneer’s tour follows the first mapped route of the Karamu Cave, using the same methods as the first explorers!

Begin your journey with a short 25-minute drive through the beautiful Waikato Countryside, all whilst your knowledgeable and experienced guide shares the history, and stories of the area. As you arrive, the descent into the beautiful natural limestone chasm, begins! From here, the peaceful walk through the Karamu cave stream leads past a few fun wriggly squeezes before entering the magnificent auditorium, where the exciting wriggle and squeeze known as the keyhole leads you to a different world!

Karamu cave is a treasure trove of delicate and prehistoric formations; stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, and crystals, as well as showcasing many fossils, from cockles to kina shells! But everyone knows the true reason people love to cave in Aotearoa, Glow worms! Luckily for us, Karamu cave has vast areas, to gaze and admire these incredible creatures, and at one point, all whilst enjoying a nice hot cup of Kawakawa tea!
